FAQ Answers

O2M Compatibility
Which programs can I import Outlook data into?
O2M converts Windows Outlook email into Apple Mail 1.X and later, contacts into the Apple Address Book 1.1 and later, and calendar appointments into iCal, all on the OS X platform. Other Apple programs, Apple operating systems, and third-party programs may also be compatible if they follow the mbox, vcf (vCard), and ics (iCal) standards. O2M converts Windows/Outlook email only; it does not convert Macintosh email or Outlook Express email. See our Compatibility grid for details.

Which Windows platforms are supported?
Windows 9x, Me, NT, 2000, XP, XP Pro, and all versions in-between, according to our tests.

Which versions of Outlook are supported? Does O2M work with Outlook Express
To date, O2M exports information from Windows Outlook 97/98, 2000, 2002, 2003, and 2007. O2M does not export information from Macintosh Outlook or any other email program running on a Macintosh machine. O2M does not convert mail from Outlook Express.

Can I convert my .pst files without having Outlook installed on my Windows machine?
No. O2M only works if you have Outlook installed on a Windows machine. and your email is visible in Outlook.
Please note also that the program does not work with Outlook Express.

Buying, Installing, and Upgrading O2M
What is the latest version of O2M?
2.1 is the official major release. You can tell which release you have by looking in O2M's title bar when you run the program. If you don't have the latest version, you can upgrade free of charge by just downloading the latest version for your version of Outlook.

What kind of O2M software licenses are available?
Individuals can use a serial number to install O2M on one machine. You may buy multiple licenses if you have more than one machine or user.

Are O2M upgrades free? How do I install one?
Once you buy a copy of O2M, upgrades are FREE as we release them. If you opted to be notified of upgrades when you paid us, we'll email you whenever a new release comes out. Upgrades will be available on the regular download page of the Little Machines web site. The procedure for installing an upgrade is the same as installing an original copy of the software. To get on our mailing list for notices about upgrades contact us.

My security settings prevent O2M from installing.
If you're working in a corporate environment where your computer's security settings prevent you from installing software, you'll probably need to get a computer administrator to install O2M for you.

Similarly, if your computer is equipped with security or anti-virus software that guards access to Outlook, you might need to change your system's settings, or even disable the security software temporarily in order for O2M to access Outlook. This is rare, but we've seen it a few times.

Does O2M support languages other than English?
O2M does not officially support non-English languages, but some of our customers have reported success with O2M and German and Russian languages by saving the converted files to Unicode. You may want to use the trial version of O2M to see if the program will work with your non-English-language files. After you're finished converting the files with O2M, save them as "Unicode" in Notepad. To do this,
  1. open the file in Notepad,
  2. Go to File > Save As...
  3. Under the name of the file and next to the "Encoding" label, select "Unicode" from the drop-down menu.
  4. Re-save the file as the same file name in the same location.
  5. Follow the importing instructions at Little Machines' O2M online user guide.

Using O2M on Your PC
Can I use O2M and Outlook at the same time?
You can use O2M while Microsoft Outlook is active. In fact, O2M will start up faster if Outlook is already running.

However, don't actively use Outlook while using O2M. If you send email, move folders, delete email, or perform other Outlook actions while O2M is scanning Outlook or exporting your data, O2M might get confused and fail to finish its job, requiring you to restart it.

The conversion process stops before all of my files are converted.
You may want to try converting your email in smaller batches. Sometimes network traffic or Outlook program activity will interfere with the conversion process.

How does O2M work?
O2M taps directly into Outlook's brain. It opens the email, contacts, and calendar items you specify, applies conversion rules to them, and writes them to disk as industry-supported mbox, vcf (vCard), and ics (iCal) files, respectively. As Microsoft, Apple, and other companies release new email, contact, and calendar software, we'll adjust O2M's rules to take changes into account.

O2M won't run on my machine
If you find the application won't run on your system, check to make sure that you're running it on your Windows machine. If you are running in on your Windows machine, check that you have a supported version of Outlook running on your Windows machine. For a matrix of the software supported, please see our home page (http://www.littlmachines.com).

Where is exported Outlook data stored on my PC?
When you run O2M, it asks you for the location of the Save Folder where your exported Outlook data will be stored. By default, this location is C:\My_Outlook_Files. If you don't point O2M to a different folder, this is the Save Folder that will be used. Before it begins exporting, O2M will create a mail, contacts, and calendar subfolder inside your Save Folder, and these are where your email, contacts, and calendar appointments will be saved. Read more.

How do I transfer my files to my Macintosh after I have converted them on my Windows machine?
Please see our tips on moving your files to your Macintosh here.

O2M Errors & Messages
The program says I have an invalid serial number.
It may be that one of the letters or numbers appears differently from what it is. For best results, copy and paste the serial number you received from us into the form fields. Don't copy the hyphens.

The program says it cannot create temporary files on the C:\ drive.
This error often occurs if you're not logged in as the administrator of the machine. Check to make sure you are logged in as the administrator. Then check the following:
- If you're running Vista, try right-clicking on the application (the shortcut to the application on your desktop will work fine) and select "Run as Administrator." You may need to re-enter the serial number once after this.
- If this doesn't work, try turning off the User Account Control in Vista. Be careful that you are the administrator when you do this, as you do not want to shut yourself out of your own machine.

http://www.petri.co.il/disable_uac_in_windows_vista.htm

This error often occurs if you're not logged in as the administrator of the machine. Do you have O2M installed on the same drive as Outlook?
- Do you have security software installed? You may want to disable this to make sure it's not blocking your progress.
- You may want to try also uninstalling and re-installing O2M. You will need to re-enter your serial number when you do this.

'A program is trying to access...Do you want to allow this?'
If you see this Microsoft message, it means Outlook has detected O2M. When the message appears, check the 'Allow access' box and select '10 minutes' from the drop-down box so O2M can finish processing.

O2M says that it cannot connect to Outlook
O2M runs on a Windows machine that has Outlook (not Outlook Express) installed on it. If you are running Outlook and not Outlook Express, the problem may be there is another program or Outlook program that is interfering with Outlook2Mac's access to Outlook. If so, this will need to be disabled, or sometimes installed. If this is not the case, you may need to re-install Outlook and get the latest updates from Microsoft. You may have a corrupt application file. Other customers have had this problem and fixed it this way.

I'm seeing this error: 'The file OLEAUT32.DLL is out of date'.
This error is generated if Outlook's drivers are outdated. This can happen with some older versions of Outlook, or if Outlook hasn't been maintained with the latest Microsoft patches, or if the program's core library files were overwritten by another program's installation. Here's how to fix it:
1. Before you can update Outlook, Microsoft requires that you have Internet Explorer 4.x SP2 or higher installed. To check your browser's version, open IE and click on Help, then About. If your browser is older than 4.x SP2, go to Microsoft's IE site at http://www.microsoft.com/ie and update your browser. We recommend upgrading to IE 5.5 or higher.
2.After your browser is updated, you can download an Outlook driver update for free from Microsoft. The drivers you need are stored in a package called MDAC. Point your web browser to: http://www.microsoft.com/data
3.Next, click on Downloads link.
4.After the Download page loads, scroll down until you see the link for Download MDAC 2.6 SP2 Refresh. Click the link. Download and install the file, which is called MDAC_TYP.exe.
4.Reboot your machine and try running O2M again. The OLEAUT32 error should go away.

What is an Automation Error or Error -2147467259?
Some versions of Outlook are equipped with a security feature that allows you to limit how long an external program like O2M is allowed access. This is especially common in corporate settings. If Outlook asks you how long to let O2M access it, you must answer in the affirmative, and give O2M enough time to run. If time runs out, Outlook will ask you the question again. If you refuse to give O2M access to Outlook, you'll see Microsoft's automation or -2147467259 error, or some other cryptic message from Outlook.

What is Error 91?
If you are receiving error "91" from O2M, there is a chance you have downloaded the wrong version of O2M for your version of Outlook. To be sure, check your version of Outlook to see which version it is, and then download the corresponding software version from our web site.

If you are still receiving this error, you may need to re-install Outlook or Windows or both, and then get the latest updates from Microsoft because you may have an application file that is corrupt.

The Error 91 occurs when Windows or Outlook refuses to allow an external program like Outlook2Mac to access Outlook\'s folder tree.

Moving Exported Outlook Files to Your Mac
How can I move exported Outlook files from my PC to my Mac?
Check out the moving section of the User Guide.

Importing Outlook Files Into Your Macintosh Programs
How do I import into Apple Mail, iCal, and Address Book?
After O2M exports your Outlook data to mbox, ics (iCal), and vcf (vCard) files, you can import them into your Apple Mail, iCalendar, and Address Book programs, respectively. For step-by-step instructions, see the Importing chapter in the user guide.

How do I import into my third-party mail or other software?
If your third-party email, calendar, or contact software supports the mbox, ics (iCal), or vcf (vCard) file format, you should be able to import Outlook data into it. Follow the instructions for importing data that came with your third-party program, or see some sample procedures for importing data in the Importing chapter of the O2M user guide.

Entourage shows the wrong date for imported emails
This is an Entourage bug, but we created a workaround for it in O2M 1.02. If you're not sure which version of O2M you have, run O2M and check the version number in the program's title bar. If the version number doesn't say 1.02 or higher, download a new copy of O2M, install it over your old copy, and export your Outlook mail again — the date problem will be fixed when you import your newly exported mail into Entourage.

Mail shows the wrong date for imported emails
It may be your email has non-US date formats to begin with. If this is the case, you may want to change your date settings on both your Windows and Macintosh machines to US/English before performing your conversion and importing operations.

O2M converts US/English dates to the standard MBOX format. If the date in the header is formatted differently from the US/English version of Outlook, the dates may not convert well. We don't currently support date formats other than US/English.

What kind of support do you offer?
O2M comes with email support. Little Machines does not offer support via telephone.
